Biography, Timothy Schultz, D.O.

As an individual drawn towards art and away from the ideal of “medicine for its’ own sake,” I found Osteopathy to be the more unique branch of medicine practiced in the United States. As an art student and the son of a cardiologist (M.D., first name Art), I was motivated to pursue a degree in medicine with the attitude: “if you can’t beat them, join them.” Osteopathy seemed to allow me to do both.

A.T. Still, M.D., a 19th century physician, “unfurled the banner of Osteopathy “ in 1874, not as something “new” but as something “ as old as the hills.” His philosophical bias helped to create a practice of medicine that possess’ its own cosmology. Osteopathy seeks to acknowledge the individual in their physical, spiritual, and emotional linking to the environment, self and others.

Through the study of the body detailed in its anatomy and physiology, coupled with exquisite training in perceptual skills, the osteopath can access the health of the body directly and specifically.

It is my belief that the successful practice of Osteopathic Medicine can provide the patient with a direct observation of the inherent process’ that are fundamental in maintaining health in the life of an individual. This is not something to be learned by the body, it is something that we all possess and have “forgotten” or paid no attention.

There may be several levels to treating the body with measurable success. Each level is interdependent on another, so each individual goes though a unique process in the course of treatment. The course is not necessarily ‘disease-specific’ but specific to the current needs of the various levels of health that are present during a treatment.

Treatment prescriptions based on palpatory evaluations are not necessarily dependent upon the severity of symptoms but on “accessibility “ during the treatment process. For some, the accessibility is a natural state and for others it takes months or years of “unlearning”.

My practice of osteopathy acknowledges the value in medical diagnosis and management but emphasizes an additional component: helping an individual to regain trust in inherent processes that contribute to Health.

Noting the difference between a tool and a crutch during the process of recovery, as well as learning the truth about a diagnosis and the limitations inherent in diagnosing become paramount for progress.
.
My practice is limited to osteopathic manipulative management and does not attempt to replace the role of a primary care physician or pediatrician.
