Spine Stabilization Stretching and Floor Exercises

The advantages of spine stabilization exercises are two fold. First, stretching specific hypertonic (tight) muscles aids in decreasing the pressure on the injured spinal area and normalizes the biomechanics of the joints crossed by those muscles. Second, strengthening weak spinal muscles improves the spines ability to handle loads by decreasing pressure placed on individual segments of the spine.

Isotonic Exercise Therapy

Patients requiring increased spinal strength due to their job responsibilities will advance to Santa Barbara Back and Neck Care Center's isotonic exercise program these machines encourage the patient to develop control over muscles supporting the spine. All exercise sessions are monitored to maintain patient posture in a stabilized position. Also, cable, free weights, theraband and balance stimulators are progressively added to build strength and control to simulate home, sporting, and work activities.

At the conclusion of this phase of the program patients are ready to re-enter the work force. Patients are knowledgable and strong enough to resume their activities of daily living and work demands without the danger of reinjury.

Cardiovascular Training

Santa Barbara Back and Neck Care Center uses the Cybex upper body ergometer (UBE) for upper body conditioning. This unit will increase the endurance and fitness of the wrists, arms, shoulders, upper back, lower neck and heart. Santa Barbara Back and Neck Care Center laso uses the Life Fitness, Life Cycle, treadmills and precore Elliptical Fitness Exercisersfor lower body conditioning. These units will increase the endureance and fitness of the ankles, calves, thighs, buttocks, low back and heart.

Back School and Ergonomics School

Back School and Ergonomics School are required for all back, neck, and post surgical patients. These programs are designed to help patients decrease fear, regain control, and return to daily functions safely by breaking habibts that cause spinal injuries.

This approach has proven to be the foundation of successful spinal rehabilitation and injury prevention programs.
